Welcome to the Chappaqua Central School District
curriculum website. By the end of the 2006-07 school year, you will find a map
of every subject at every grade level, K-8. In addition, our high school
courses, as listed in our Decisions booklet, soon will be on-line.
A curriculum map is a tool for organizing what Chappaqua expects students to
know and be able to do in each subject each year. A map lists the main topics,
essential questions, content, and skills for each subject at each grade level.
As you can imagine, a two- dimensional map cannot capture the rich,
multi-dimensional curriculum we teach. We hope, nonetheless, that you will find
the maps valuable as tools for understanding what our students are learning.
This is our first year of providing curriculum maps to parents, and we expect to
make revisions throughout the years as we learn how to make our maps even more
effective.
Although we have a consistent essential district curriculum, teachers often do
not teach the same topics at the same time or in the same way. Teachers
differentiate curriculum and make adjustments based on student need.
Multi-disciplinary teams may integrate their curriculum, and teachers may assess
in different and multiple ways. Note, too, that some content extends beyond one
year, as many concepts and skills need to be reinforced and practiced
continually.
Our curriculum maps are not lesson plans. Rather, they are broad outlines of
what students need to know and be able to do each year. They were
collaboratively created by our teachers, who spent many hours over the last two
years reaching consensus about the curriculum that is essential for our
students. As a result, the content of our maps includes and often exceeds state
standards.
When viewing our curriculum maps, please keep in mind the ongoing nature of our
work. We periodically revise our curriculum as appropriate and update our maps.
We use our maps as a springboard for discussion about student learning and
teaching practices.
We hope this tool will, at the very least, allow you to gain an overview of each
year's curriculum. At their best, our maps will raise important questions about
teaching and learning as we continually improve.
Sincerely,
Lyn McKay, Ph.D.
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction
